DID YOU KNOW that music as we know it today, originates from a prince in ancient China? From a young age, Prince Zaiyu was a genius in mathematics, poetry, astronomy, and of course, music. He discovered that you only need twelve musical tones to make the most beautiful music. In The Mountain Man of Music, learn more about the life of this Chinese prince, from the time he was a crying baby to the last days of his life. Without Zaiyu, we probably would not be listening to the music of Mozart, Michael Jackson, and Eminem today! The simple language and beautiful illustrations make this book a wonderful reader or bedtime story. It is suitable for all ages, but children aged six to twelve years will especially enjoy reading this book. ~ About the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA… Series ~ China has a long history, but its many stories are often too complex for children. We are homeschooling our 7-year-old grandson who reads at a high 3rd grade or low 4th grade level. This book and its seven companion books have been independent reading for him as we focus on all things China during this term. He absolutely loves these books and is now going through them in his spare time for the second time. We have also found them informative as teachers and have learned lots of things about famous people in China and their inventions, discoveries, history, and creations. This book tells about a Chinese prince whose musical and math skills laid the foundation for the musical tones that we use today. Who knew? We should!! We like the fact that there are excellent “Did you know?” nuggets of information and review questions at the end of each book, in addition to a map that shows where the events of the book happened. The illustrations are great as well, informative and artistic. Some people have mentioned that these books are too short, but we think that they are just right, particularly with the added facts and questions at the end. They are packed with good and interesting info that children will enjoy without feeling overwhelmed with facts. Our only complaint is that you have to buy each book separately as opposed to the entire collection. But buying them all was definitely worth it!!
