Pleased with book and its condition. Quality was as described.As a child in the ‘40’s I would pencil in my notebook the engine numbers of the great trains with their magnificent colors (prior to the drab browns of nationalization), stare and listen in awe at the cacophony of noise and bustle in the cathedral like stations. Now in my ‘80’s to read the magnificently described history of the engineers and visionaries that made my childhood fascination for trains so memorable. Well done!Great book portraying the extraordinary achievements of a extremely impressive engineer and individual. An important tail to be shared to future aspiring engineers. Highly recommended.This is an excellent book giving a most comprehensive and well illustrated account of the man and his work. It seems to have become rare, having only been published for a few years. Thus it was difficult to obtain a copy. I bought one for myself immediately it was published and was so impressed by the book that I wished to buy a copy as a present. I could only find one in the U.S.A.Amazon is a good source of out-of-print books and can be recommended.This book, for me, provides much missing info on Brunel pere, which I had looked for in vain. Also a new perspective on Isambard, which complements the earlier Rolt biography I read years ago.Well worth the read for anybody interested in the industrial revolution or engineering in general.jpGood factual reading in a brilliant, passionate Engineer.Reduced size was disappointing. This slipped by me when ordering. I thought I was ordering the hard copy with the gate-fold, etc. but this is the soft cover with reduced images. My mistake.A very good read though about an interesting man.A broad brush-stroke introduction to a monumental figure, this book leaves you wanting to know more, both about him and his creations.As exciting as a good novel, this book is a compelling read, comprehensive and well researched. You really get to know Isambard, warts and all, and his prodigious solutions for what others said was impossible. But he left a trail of bankruptcies behind him; but then, money is just another resource; it is skills, experience and expertise that makes a great business, and he had those in spades!It is a shame that the images are hidden at the back (in the Kindle version),, they should at least be cross referenced in the text.I read this book pretty much cover to cover. Not a riveting read unless you are interested in Brunel. Having worked on many of his bridges and some of his lasting structures, I was interested to understand more about the man and his extraordinary life. Very interesting and well writtenI got to the chronology in the kindle edition and thought I'd reached the end of the book. I felt a bit cheated because the hardback has illustrations and there seemed to be no illustrations in the kindle edition I had. Then I scrolled on to the end and found what I wanted...This book was a Christmas gift to my husband...he has been reading it since Christmas Day and as a retired engineer himself, he has loved it. Arrived on time for Christmas and prompt response from seller to my email enquiry. I also like the fact that part of the cost of the book has gone into creating more libraries and further education.This paperback is a punchy expletive on Brunel's life and his thoughts and acts . I liked the text and it was gripping . You didn't want to put the book down . Illustrations are enough to give one an idea , but wouldn't overwealm the non-technical of us . I recommend this to anyone , Engineers included . A good read .
