DESCRIPTION
If Goron cannot prevent the ruthless wizard Manoueka from retrieving an ancient magical gemstone, the wizard will unleash a powerful flood of magical energy on the world. When Goron breaks into Manoueka’s tower to discover whether the wizard has the stone, he is captured and imprisoned. Annissa struggles to survive in the city of Synnakon. When she is caught casting spells without a license, she is imprisoned along with Goron. Torn from her moorings and drawn into a life of adventure by Goron, she struggles to define a new identity for herself. Goron and Annissa escape prison and flee Synnakon in a race to reach the stone’s last burying place before Manoueka. In the arcane tomes of a library in the ancient city of Iskander, Goron finds out where Korefael is hidden. Journeying from Iskander to a necropolis outside the desert city of Amonkhareb, Goron must find the gemstone in time to prevent Manoueka from using the artifact and destroy them all.

It put me in mind of the old Conan books. Not the flowery prose of the originals, but the setting, characters and conflict generated by sorcery. By the end of the first chapter there is a lot going on to keep the reader interested.
