I have been a fan of the Henry Rios series since I first discovered the books in the early 90’s. Lies with Man is definitely my favorite of all. Maybe this is because I have loved growing along with the Rios character. Rios continues to mature, and we, as readers, can appreciate this growth and for those of us of a certain age, can relate to the changes he makes. Like all of Nava’s works, we get a bit of a much needed history lesson along with the entertaining narrative. In some ways the entire series can be seen as a collection of period pieces because we become so immersed in the culture of the time period. The characters are multi-faceted, and I personally love the representation of groups that are often excluded from some fictional works. From different ethnic groups, different sexual choices to characters who are heavy drinkers and others in recovery, the full gamut of human possibility is all included, and the characters are fully developed. Although it is tremendously interesting to begin the series with the first of these stories about Henry Rios, The Little Death, Lies with Man will stand alone. Even without knowing all of Rios’ backstory, the reader can understand and appreciate the struggles Rios faces in this part of the series. After reading Lies with Man, I feel strongly that most new readers will be inclined to follow all of Rios’ previous adventures, and I heartily endorse that. The entire series has captivated my heart since the very beginning.
