Humphrey Hawksley’s Man on Edge takes the reader on a thrilling adventure tackling a path reserved for the brave. A daring doctor, Carrie Walker finds herself caught up in an international incident that involves not only her family but also her former would-be husband, Rake Ozenna, a military man himself. Interestingly, she has had no reason to contact these men in recent times but her sense of duty has her committing to playing a crucial role in a plot they have found themselves caught up in. She faces betrayal, abandonment and also unexpected kindness but before she can complete her mission, she sees death and her resolve is tested.The setting of the story was particularly fitting. The travel through Russian territory enhanced the fast-paced storyline, adding a special kind of chill to the thrill of the chase. The best thing about this book is that the details and high intensity keeps you engaged throughout. There were times when the inner motivations of the characters were not that clear but it added to the mystery and impact of the twists throughout. The author seems to have done thorough research based on the security information provided and the protocols described. It was certainly sufficient to suspend disbelief. The numerous deaths became jarring at one point but when espionage and state secrets are involved, one can’t really expect anything different. I enjoyed the realistic depiction of relationships between characters since their jobs made it difficult for them to maintain more than loose connections with questionable loyalties and motivations.Even though the adventure clearly continues, all the issues felt resolved at the end. It was a truly satisfying read. Fans of political thrillers will enjoy reading and the undercurrent romance between Carrie and Rake just adds that touch of hope.
