This is the story of a man, an age, a movement, his perserverance, and change in America. It is the civil rights era told from the African-American viewpoint with little if any rancor or bitterness. It demonstrates that, while we still have a long way to go,there has been significant change in the American South. Here is one who helped bring about this change by staying in the South and demonstrating daily that sterotypes are without value. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" could indeed be his motto. Perhaps this is not great literature in an English professor's view, but it is a wonderful telling of the story of the life of a fine man. It is well worth reading.
