DESCRIPTION
The third volume of Parade’s End—one of the outstanding works about World War I and British society before, during, and after that cataclysm—this novel focuses on Valentine Wannop in London and Christopher Tietjens away at war, with the narrative concluding on Armistice Day. Making a dramatic comment on prewar life and morality, this is a perceptive exploration of time, history, and sexuality. This first-ever critical edition is fully annotated and includes a new introduction by a leading expert on Ford Madox Ford.

"A Man Could Stand Up" is part three of Ford Maddox Ford's magnificent novel of the First World War. It may however be considered in some respects the climax of the novel. And for the patient reader to this point, the author will tell the story backwards and forwards, in train of thought.Valentine Wannop is in London on Armistice Day, 1918, as the world goes a bit mad over the end of the Great War. She has not seen or heard from Christopher Tietjens in two years. She will be the recipient of a strange phone call. For most of this novel, Christopher Tietjens is still in France. He is in acting command of a frontline battalion, and suffering both the war itself and the cruelties of his estranged wife. But if he can survive, he might just have the opportunity to stand up again, and get on with his life..."Parade's End" is not an easy read. For those willing to put in the effort, it can be enormously rewarding. This special edition includes extensive notes and explanatory material. Very well recommended.
