Into the Dust is a vivid depiction of Burning Man. Reading it, I had the distinct feeling of the heat, the dust, the physical exertion, and the pure joy radiating from the characters. I was encouraged to hear that newcomer are always welcome and thrilled to read about all the various aspects of Burning Man. For example, untethered art, incredible light, and sound shows and unlimited, uncontained creativity. In fact, I was enlightened to a whole new level of artistic expression uncaged. Reading this book, I was moved, impacted, and changed. The true nature of human honesty and respect are also explored in depth throughout the story. The author, Jack Lyons, details the way peoples’ boundaries are vigorously defended by the community. For example, consent is always required for any physical contact. The scene at the Temple and the burning of The Man are moving tales that conveyed human joy, emotion, and deep sadness. Raw emotions are safely shared with fellow burners since those tales are held dear. The worshiper is held in deep and tender support. I’ve been curious to experience Burning Man, and I believe this novel is a great primer. Possibly even a must read. It evoked different responses and fears in me that were surprising and unexpected. Read this novel and be prepared to be surprised about the nuances of Burning Man as well as the unexpressed “self” lying deep within, within all of us.
