DESCRIPTION
Man Makes Himself is the classic introduction to the history of early man. Starting more than 340,000 years ago, when man's ability to make a fire and fashion stone tools helped him to survive among the wild beasts, it traces his development as a food producer, the emergence of cities and states, the rise of foreign trade, and the urban revolution.

So Childe was a very interesting anthropologist. He's famous for being one of the first to champion Marxist archeology and later committed suicide at the age of like 65 years old, throwing himself off a cliff. Interesting guy!Anyhow, this book is very refreshing because it doesn't have a ton, or any references, which most of the time I would think is a bad thing, but in this case you get this uninterrupted flow of thoughts, observations, and arguments. His insights that we adapt through culture rather than simply through our genes is absolutely inspirational. Very enjoyable book. I know some of his anthropology insights have not held up so well, but his approach to the subject is so cogent that following the thought processes of this brilliant man is just a pleasure.
