I remember when this book was first released. I was the proud owner of my first camera. I had ambitions of becoming a great photographer. After many hundreds of rolls of film (yes, really. I had a standing order from the Kodak professional store in Philadelphia to ship me film every month.) I developed them all myself in a military hobby photo lab) I finally admitted I had little talent. But many of my heroes were represented in this unique photo-as-art exihibit. Now it is no longer unique. There have been many similar museum shows of photography. But this is the first. I particularly like the conclusion. it is a picture of hope, after seeing many pictures of the cruelty of man to man.But I bought this particular book, the anniversary edition, used. The description: "Condition: Used - Good - Pages can have notes/highlighting. Spine may show signs of wear." What it did not say was the first page of the book was torn, about an inch from the top edge and 3/4 of an inch from the inside binding edge, then cut neatly down diagonally ending 4 inches from the binding at the bottom. This leaves the first page not just missing but conspicuously not there. I don't call this good. Also, the entire book, not just the spine, shows physical signs of wear. Nevertheless, the glory of the photos, individually and in total, cannot be hidden.I am buying this book for my niece and nephew. It’s a great way to introduce a lot of subjects to younger children. When my father was stationed in India, we got the original and saw the display that went on tour. It impressed me very much back then when it first appeared. When I saw that an Anniversary edition was available, I just HAD to buy it for myself to enjoy once again and pass along to MY family. It was a ONE-of-a-KIND SHOW!!!!Absolutely beautiful photo collection. I heard about this collection through a photography art history course and had to find the book. Now it's a fantastic coffee table book and its compelling collection ranges from influential photographers in the early years of artistic photography.Classic book, and the photographs and captions are just as relevant as they were back then. The print quality is excellent for a book that was originally published so long ago. This has always been one of my favorite books. I'm giving it as a gift for someone very special. I've had my copy for 50 years! It is even more special than my original copy. I have enjoyed this collection so much, over the years, that I gave this as a gift to someone veryspecial to me.I'm so pleased that it is back in hardcover print. If you at all like photography of people, then buy this book.
