Fortunately, I have a region-free blu ray player, so all I have to do is press the blue button on my remote for region 2 to get it to start playing. Out of the Blue (1980) is a film that was in obscurity for decades until its reemergence in recent years. This film is really a tragedy, and seen through the eyes of a tormented teen (“Cebe”), played by Linda Manz, a tomboy who loves Elvis and the Sex Pistols. Director Dennis Hopper plays Cebe’s father, who is a rugged blue collar working class man and alcoholic. The family is dysfunctional as a whole, with the mother being a drug addict, and Cebe finding herself trying to cope with her harsh reality by turning to listening to the music of her idols as well as sucking her thumb. Regression as well with the latter? However, the prevailing music is the Neil Young song MY MY HEY HEY (OUT OF THE BLUE), a song from the 1979 album, Rust Never Sleeps, the perfect backdrop to the film, and setting the pace and rhythm of the film. Out of the Blue has all of the ingredients of a tragedy: rebellion, revenge, murder, substance abuse, physical abuse, and even suicide. Linda Manz carries the film in her back, and her performance is genuine and believable. I certainly hope that this film can make its way into the public’s consciousness in the years ahead, because it’s an important film with a strong message. The special features are a nice bonus to have and are interesting. I recommend this unsung masterpiece.
