DESCRIPTION
This book is a thought-provoking study of some issues concerning the historic Calvinist/Arminian debate. Does God know absolutely everything that's going to happen? Can He foresee future moral choices and actions which have not yet been made? If one's future responses and behavior are totally foreknowable, is she truly free? Dr. Richard Rice explores these and other fascinating questions which have sometimes divided Christians. The author gives new perspective on one of the most fundamental issues of the Christian faith: the relationship of God to His creation and the reality and extent of human freedom. Carefully scrutinizing the Scriptures on this subject, the author challenges the reader to examine for himself this critical issue of theology. With strong theological background and sound biblical scholarship, Dr. Rice presents his viewpoint in a convincing and readable style.

I read this book's fist edition circa 1985 when I was going to a very "reformed" Presbyterian Church (PCA). I knew I could not believe in meticulous predestination or even God choosing who is "saved" or "lost". The concepts in the book changed my life - I could believe in the efficacy of prayer again. Exhortations to act in various ways made sense (how could God plead for behaviors while knowing all that will ever happen). And most of all I could believe in righteous God who is not an author of sin. One hangup was the so-called predictive prophecy. It made me understand that most prophecies are either conditional (if you do not turn from your ways I'm going to release you to Babylon) or announcements of what God is going to do irregardless of human actions. One exception is Peter's Denial.Richard Rice's "Open View of God" says that God did not cause nor does he know future events before they happen. No doubt He has very good understanding of our hearts and thus possesses more predictive power than we do, but not perfect. Why else would God through Biblical injunctions or the Spirit ask us to act is certain manners if He already knows it. It is actually the framework that the Bible is written within. Read Gen 1, 2 , and 22 for starters. H. Roy Elseth's "Did God Know?" quotes more than 11,000 verses that show God changes His mind in response to human actions.God is genuinely rooting for all of us and watching as it all happens. We truly have free will albeit tainted with urges to sin as well as the Spirit to guide in the ways God would have us go.I find that most Christians act, talk, and pray as believers in the Open View whether they admit it or not.I have lent my old edition copies (2) to tens of people most of whom are at least intrigue by (if not totally sold on) the "Open View of God". I just bought this 2005 edition (unchanged as far as I can tell) just to have another book to lend out. And I re-read it for the sure pleasure. It is short, insightful, and motivational.
