Given the age of this book there have been a lot of advances and revisions in the field of human evolution, but that is not the main topic of this book. (Although the same author gives an excellent treatment of it in "Lowly Origin: Where, When, and Why Our Ancestors First Stood Up".)The central thesis of this book is about how our species in particular has been directing its own evolution and affecting the evolution of other plants and animals. It makes fascinating and essential reading for understanding our place and responsibility in the world. The later chapters on race and ecology are generally excellent and alarmingly as relevant now as when they were written.
