it is seldom that the first sentence of the preview of a book opens your heart to a book but that is what I found. It is not a book to be read for readings sake, it is a book to read a paragraph or two and then contemplate what it has awakened- this is spiritual food and you pause often to wait for your growth to catch up. Heschel's "Prophets" is heavy and filling, it takes work to get from one important insight to the next while "Man's Quest for God" carries you on its back. This was written in the decade after Heschel had lost his family to the Holocaust and is the work of a Rabbi with strong reference to Jewish Spiritual practice- that said, this Quaker found it insightful in its thoughts on prayer and the life of the spirit.
