DESCRIPTION
The Stockton Saga continues. Deputy U.S. Marshal Cole Stockton must escort a fugitive who fled to Canada to avoid a murder warrant back to Judge Wilkerson's court in Denver. With prisoner in tow, he discovers that his lady friend, horse rancher Laura Sumner, is overdue to deliver remounts to Fort Laramie in the Wyoming Territory. Stockton comes upon devastation. Three of Laura's men are dead, the remaining wranglers wounded and horseless, and Laura is missing. When the lawman searches for Laura and the perpetrators he must also keep reign on his prisoner. In the wilds of Wyoming, he realizes that utilizing the character and skills of the person under warrant are his only hope in the rancher's rescue. From dealing with ambushers who outnumber him twelve to one, to facing a hired killer dispatched to execute him, to organizing and leading the rescue of Laura's trusted ranch hand from an evil Ranchero in Mexico, Cole Stockton embodies justice as he proves himself a man to reckon with. A novel of the Old West, packed with the drama and suspense of wild horse hunts, interpersonal relationships, and outlaws handled with determination and six-gun justice.

Steven Douglas Glover's new page turner thriller moves effortlessly through the dusty landscape of late nineteenth century Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Southern Canada and even as far south as Mexico. His assured storytelling makes The Stockton Saga 3 one of those rare westerns that both entertain and intrigue the reader while developing a certain cachet.Lawmen of the old wild west were a breed apart. They were often lonely, but never bored. Wandering, but not lost. Determined but rarely vengeful, seeking truth and justice over personal comfort and need. United State Marshal Cole Stockton was one of those men. Almost always the fastest draw in a gun fight, he drew respect from all, and his name recognition and reputation was spread far and wide. Whether pursuing horse thieves, bank robbers, cattle rustlers or just men with a bad outlook on life, Cole Stockton is indeed a man to reckon with. He enlists the help of accused murderer, Charley Westbrook, to help fight off a band horse thieves seeking revenge for a foiled earlier encounter. Westbrook becomes a deputized prisoner, and then a life-long exonerated friend. His long running affection for horse rancher Laura Sumner keeps us involved in a personal way. When Cole is in trouble...we all feel in trouble. Laura seems to have one of those rare intuitive senses which we think Cole feels over time and distance. They are closer than the writer will admit until late in the book. When I began reading this novel, I somehow thought it was the last book of a trilogy. However, at the end of the last chapter, Glover left himself an opening to a brand new canvas.Indeed, Sir Ian Fleming wrote 14 "James Bond, Agent 007" novels. Tom Clancy's favorite protagonist Jack Ryan appeared in several books before Clancy allowed Ryan to be killed. However, Clancy solved the problem by introducing Jack Ryan, Jr. Could we indeed be lucky enough to see additional Stockton Saga novels in the future?Steven Douglas Glover is an exciting new novelist. There are undoubtedly many more interesting, captivating stories just waiting to flow down the barrel of his pen. I rate this book a five star.Homer Williams, DocentTexas State History Museum
