Now a major motion picture starring Guy Pearce, Pierce Brosnan & Minnie Driver. Mild-mannered philosophy professor Evan Birch spends his days teaching college students to seek truth. Then, one afternoon, he’s pulled over by the police, handcuffed, and questioned about the disappearance of a local high school cheerleader. When the missing girl’s lipstick turns up in his car, the evidence against him begins to build. Even his wife and sons are having their doubts. And as the investigating officer engages him in a decidedly non-Socratic dialogue, Evan Birch begins to understand that truth may be elusive indeed — but sometimes you have to pick a story and stick with it… From prize-winning author George Harrar, “The Spinning Man” offers riveting, whip-smart suspense in a tale in which every word matters-and questions of guilt and innocence are suddenly much more than academic.

Evan Branch is a philosophy professor at a local college who lives in his head and relishes the big questions of existence. Although his students may not always be as charmed by Wittgenstein as he is, he’s bumping along well enough in his mundane daily routine. The bubble of his intellectual refuge is suddenly and brutally pierced. A teenage girl has gone missing. Evan’s car was seen parked at the place where she may have been abducted. When a policeman stops and handcuffs him in front of his sons, he becomes caught up in the relentless gears of a criminal investigation. And the clues are pointing toward him, including the girl’s lipstick found in his car. As readers we are pulled along by the downward spiraling of this “spinning man.” The unfolding narrative comes to us through the protagonist’s increasingly muddled mind, and the ground keeps shifting under us as readers. We don’t know whether to identify with him or condemn him as a possible criminal. Even as plot tightens its grip, the story offers no easy answers. Applause for author George Harrar who keeps us off balance in a novel whose ambiguous ending sticks with you. Recommended reading for anyone seeking smart suspense that goes beyond the routine whodunit. The novel has been adapted to the screen—I can’t wait to see the film version!
