Rodriguez has ensnared me ever since I saw the film Searching for Sugarman and quickly bought the soundtrack. It cuts deep. And, I can say like all the rest of his U.S, fans that it is a head shaker that I hadn't heard this sooner. My favorite song is Crucify Your Mind but usually my other favorites change day by day. There really isn't a clunker, however A Most Disgusting Song sounds dated though it does paint a picture that is familiar in the same way we've all stepped in something we didn't want to. Still, if Rodriguez could not be heard shouting out in his interviews for a woman to be the next pope or president (and he often says as the old song does..."women are smarter") - I don't see how he could deliver that song live. The song Cause will slay you in your tracks, you won't be able to stop singing Sugarman and the other songs will also keep seeping into your being until they find the righteousness in you. Well, they are doing so for me, anyway. I do think the selections represent his body of work well but the soundtrack leaves off enough gems off to make sure you seek out both Cold Fact and Coming From Reality. I love watching the recent interviews and live song performances. Equally enchanting is Rodriguez when he speaks. His equanimity, graciousness, gracefulness, humility, and social awareness are uplifting. If you listen to his covers it says even more about the man and his self awareness. He does cover Like a Rollling Stone....some of the words are omitted or out of order but he captures the spirit. And it is brilliant that he covers I'm Gonna Live Until I Die because that is exactly what he is doing now. He also knows where he stands in relation to Dylan. He has himself said it is ludicrous to compare him to Dylan. He recognizes that Dylan has written and recorded hundreds of songs and Rodriguez has recorded about 30. I agree with Rodriguez that the comparison is ludicrous. The breadth and depth of Dylan''s songwriting is unparalleled and it is most comforting to know that Rodriguez sees that truth as well. That said, Rodriguez has written a handful of songs that can stand up with Dylan's and how many people can say that? I think this "cat" is exactly the kind of person Dylan admires and am surprised that Dylan didn't play a Rodriguez song or two on Theme Time Radio Hour. Last words: BUY THIS SOUNDTRACK NOW.
