The first 20 paragraphs of this biography are the best I’ve encountered, outside of Caro’s The Power Broker. The rest is nearly as sharp.I’d read a long, tiresome biography of Bismarck’s previously and put this one aside, not feeling the need to read more than one life of Bismarck.Years later, I heard Niall Ferguson had attributed his choice to pursue History, to AJP Taylor; and a day later I happened back upon this book among my shelves. Too coincidental to ignore.I began reading it, and - well, you know what I think of the first 20 paragraphs. If you’re at all interested in Bismarck, in Germany, or in history between Napoleon and WWI, read this. It’s a beautiful picture of this man and his life.
