DESCRIPTION
A Good Man takes you back to the smoky haze of Madison Square Garden in the 1950s, when college basketball was king. It transports you to a dead-quiet high school gym in Hawaii, where Shaquille O'Neal is quietly listening to a legend. The Pete Newell story, told with great detail and affection by Bruce Jenkins, is a portrayal of a great man who just happens to be a basketball lifer. It is about a coach from a much simpler time, whose wisdom is as contemporary as it is old. Get to know Pete Newell. He truly has had an amazing life.

Pete Newell was an icon, a legend in basketball, a coach who had more influence on the game than any other coach. But for Pete, it was not about the game, it was about making men better, not only in basketball, but preparing them for the game of life. He instilled in his players a sense of integrity, of teamwork, of achievement through hard work, and of balance in their lives.I attended about 100 of Newell's Cal games, and was a close friend of one of his players at USF, who could verify much of what was in this book.Bruce Jenkins has done a marvelous job in portraying the essence of the man, his character, his flaws and his good points, a man who gave nearly all of himself to so many players, coaches, and fans alike. It is a book I will keep, treasure, and refer to again.
