Maverick Hunter X is a 2005 PSP remake of the classic "Mega Man X", released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (or SNES) in 1994. The game was meant to be a reboot of the Mega Man X series, but due to poor sales, this never came to fruition.Beat for beat, Maverick Hunter X is a complete remake of the original SNES game, with graphics updated to better resemble Megaman X8 (the most recent game in the series at the time), a superior story and high quality voice acting. To keep things fresh, some aspects of the game were changed to provide returning players with a new experience, such as reworked item locations, redesigned levels and improved enemy A.I, while some changes were made to appeal to newer players, such as improved difficulty balancing for bosses. Not all changes were for the better however. Returning players will be suprised to learn that charging your X-Buster takes longer than in any other X series game, and with some weapons like the Fire Wave, this actively puts you at a disadvantage. Wall jumping is also affected, as dash jumping off walls was made harder to do in Maverick Hunter X. Furthermore, unlike Maverick Hunter X's sibling game "Megaman Powered Up", Maverick Hunter X suffers from minor slowdown in some hectic or crowded areas.Still, none of these changes make the game not a blast to play. The game's superior presentation and storytelling to the SNES original more than makes up for any of the game's shortcomings, and unlike the original, there is plenty of replay value in the game's unlockable Hard Mode and (avoiding spoilers) a completely new unlockable campaign starring a familiar character.I give Maverick Hunter X 5/5 stars. It's a very inexpensive must own title for PSP users, and stands as a faithful remake of a classic game.
